Adobe Scan can take the photos you send to it, automatically translate the text, and convert it into a digital document. It handles the conversion process through the use of some impressive optical-character recognition technology and produces the results as a PDF file. But while Adobe Scan is ostensibly free, you'll need to pay if you want to make use of its most robust features.

Getting your document scanned in isn't difficult at all either. You can either pick from photos already in your collection by choosing Gallery or use the Camera mode to scan the materials with your phone's screen. Adobe Scan's character recognition is smart. You don't even need to click any buttons. Just point your phone at the materials, and Adobe Scan will automatically translate the necessary information. And if you're dealing with a large book or a pile of paperwork, Adobe Scan will quickly format them into new digital pages. Regardless of what you're shooting, the software will automatically align and crop it.

Once a picture has been scanned into a document, it can be automatically uploaded to the Adobe cloud or sent to text or email. The caveat is that you may need to invest in additional storage, as Adobe only offers 2 GB of free space on the cloud. Additionally, a Creative Cloud subscription is necessary if you want to convert your document into any format other than PDF.

As far as mobile OCR readers and PDF converters go, Adobe Scan is one of the best. It's quick, reliable, and mostly free to use. But if you're in need of an intensive scanner, you may want to invest in something more serious - and possibly hardware-based.
